What Are You Talking About?

Apr 16, 2023    Matt Willingham

In this sermon, we delve into the passage from Luke 24:13-32, where two disciples are on their way to Emmaus, feeling discouraged and downcast after the crucifixion of Jesus. Unbeknownst to them, Jesus Himself joins them on their journey, leading to a transformative encounter. We explore the dangers of drifting and delusions, the power of the Word, and the reward of relationship.

We begin by examining the danger of drifting. The disciples were leaving Jerusalem, the city of promise, purpose, and God's presence, and heading towards Emmaus, a place that symbolizes obscurity and despise. We emphasize the importance of staying connected to God's promises and purpose, as drifting away can lead to discouragement and a loss of direction.

Next, we explore the danger of delusions. The disciples were consumed by their own understanding of recent events, failing to recognize Jesus in their midst. We highlight the significance of being attentive to what we give authority and access to in our lives. When we focus on misconceptions and false narratives, we can miss the truth and the presence of God.

We then delve into the power of the Word. Jesus, in His encounter with the disciples, explains the Scriptures to them, helping them understand the prophetic fulfillment through His suffering and resurrection. We emphasize the importance of listening to the right source and aligning our thoughts and words with the truth of God's Word.

Lastly, we discuss the reward of relationship. As Jesus sits at the table with the disciples, breaks bread, and gives thanks, their eyes are opened, and they recognize Him. They reflect on the burning in their hearts as Jesus spoke and opened the Scriptures to them. We highlight the transformative power of encountering Jesus in a personal relationship, recognizing that God is not only for us and with us but also resides within us through His Spirit.

Through this sermon, we aim to inspire a renewed passion for a vibrant relationship with Jesus. We encourage the congregation to avoid drifting and delusions, seek wisdom from the Word, and pursue deep, intimate connection with God. By doing so, we can experience divine encounters, hearts set ablaze, and a renewed sense of purpose and direction in our lives.
