Why Do You Worry?

Apr 23, 2023    Matt Willingham

In this sermon, we focus on the passage from Matthew 6:25-34, where Jesus teaches his disciples not to worry about their basic needs but to trust in God's provision. We explore the destructive nature of worry and how it can consume our minds and undermine our faith.

We examine three key insights about worry. First, worry is the act of allowing what is out of our control to take control of our minds. We learn from the example of the lilies of the field, which don't worry about their clothing, yet are beautifully cared for by God. Second, worry is taking God's promises in vain. We affirm the faithfulness of God's promises, emphasizing that they are always "Yes" in Christ. Third, worry results from having the wrong priority. We are reminded to seek first God's kingdom and righteousness, knowing that He will provide for our needs.

We discuss how to battle worry effectively. First, we recognize our great value to God, understanding that He cares for us even more than the birds of the sky. We reflect on Romans 8:31-32, affirming that if God is for us, nothing can be against us. Second, we acknowledge the unproductiveness of worry. We realize that worrying cannot add a single hour to our lives. Third, we recognize God's grace for today and focus on the present rather than being consumed by worries about tomorrow. We draw inspiration from Lamentations 3:22-23, emphasizing God's love, faithfulness, and new mercies every morning.

Through this sermon, we aim to provide practical guidance for finding freedom from worry by trusting in God's provision. By shifting our focus to God's care, embracing His promises, and living with gratitude in the present moment, we can experience peace and contentment in the face of life's uncertainties.
