What Are You Looking For?

Apr 9, 2023    Dr. Phil Willingham

In this sermon, we will explore the barriers that can hinder our encounter with the risen Lord, drawing insights from the encounters of Mary Magdalene, the disciples, and Thomas after Jesus' resurrection. Each barrier presents a unique challenge that many of us can relate to in our own faith journey.

Sorrow Can Be a Barrier:

We will reflect on Mary Magdalene's sorrow and how it initially prevented her from recognizing Jesus. We will explore the ways in which our own sorrows and grief can blind us to the presence of Christ and hinder our spiritual growth.

Fear Can Be a Barrier:

Examining the disciples' fear as they met behind locked doors, we will discuss how fear can paralyze our faith and prevent us from experiencing the transformative power of Christ's resurrection. We will explore how to overcome fear and step into the freedom and peace that comes from encountering the living Lord.

Doubt Can Be a Barrier:

Thomas' doubt serves as a reminder that doubt is a common struggle among believers. We will discuss how doubt can hinder our faith and prevent us from fully experiencing the reality of Christ's resurrection. We will explore ways to address and overcome doubt, allowing us to embrace a deeper and more vibrant relationship with Jesus.

Frustration Can Be a Barrier:

Using the story of the disciples' frustrating fishing expedition, we will delve into the barriers created by frustration and disappointment in our lives. We will discuss how our own frustrations can cloud our vision and hinder us from recognizing the blessings and guidance that the risen Lord offers. We will explore how to shift our perspective and invite God's abundant provision into our lives.

Shame Can Be a Barrier:

Peter's experience of shame and subsequent encounter with Jesus on the beach provide valuable lessons for us. We will examine how shame can isolate us and hinder our ability to receive forgiveness and restoration. We will discuss the transforming power of God's grace and how we can break free from shame's grip to embrace the fullness of our identity in Christ.

Throughout the sermon, we will also draw from 2 Corinthians 1:3-5, highlighting the message of God's healing counsel, His presence in our struggles, and our calling to extend the same comfort to others.

Join us as we explore these barriers and discover how to break through them, opening ourselves to encounter the risen Lord in our lives today.
