Why Are You Afraid?
In this sermon, we explore the passage from Mark 4:35-41, where Jesus and his disciples face a violent storm while crossing the sea. The disciples, filled with fear, wake Jesus and question his concern for their well-being. Jesus responds by calming the storm and rebuking their lack of faith. We also reference Acts 17:27-28, emphasizing that God is near to us and in Him we find our existence.
We examine the different scales of fear and distinguish between destructive fear and constructive (righteous) fear. Destructive fear encompasses fear of the unknown, the future, Satan, natural disasters, and physical harm or death. However, we learn that fear is ultimately confronted not by our own courage but by the presence of Jesus.
We delve into the concept of constructive fear, specifically the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom. This fear involves having a big view of God and recognizing His power and love.
Through this sermon, we aim to encourage individuals to find peace and strength in the presence of Jesus, realizing that fear is the wrong use of imagination. By cultivating a constructive fear of the Lord and relying on His power, we can overcome destructive fear and live courageously, grounded in faith.
