Do You Want To Be Made Well?

May 21, 2023    Matt Willingham

In this sermon, we will explore the powerful story from the Gospel of John, where Jesus encounters a multitude of sick and suffering individuals at the pool of Bethesda. We will examine four key themes that emerge from this narrative, each revealing important insights about our faith journey.

The Magnitude of the Mess: We will delve into the scene at the pool of Bethesda, originally intended as a place of miracles but now filled with misery. By reflecting on this contrast, we can better understand the challenges and hardships we face in our lives, recognizing that even in the midst of despair, God's transformative power is at work.

The Danger of Despair: Through the story of the man who had been infirm for thirty-eight years, we will explore the detrimental effects of dwelling in a state of despair. We will emphasize the importance of remaining determined and avoiding doubt, even when circumstances seem insurmountable.

The Sight of the Wrong Source: Jesus encounters a man who has become accustomed to making excuses, blaming his lack of progress on the absence of someone to help him into the pool. We will discuss how excuses can hinder our breakthroughs and prevent us from fully embracing the healing and transformation God offers.

The Demand and Declaration: This segment focuses on Jesus' command to the man to rise, take up his bed, and walk. We will highlight the significance of obedience in receiving God's blessings and healing. By exploring the idea that our obedience often precedes our healing, we can understand the importance of taking action and stepping out in faith.

Throughout the sermon, we will encourage our congregation to reflect on their own lives and consider areas where they may be experiencing misery, despair, and misplaced focus. By embracing the transformative power of Jesus and stepping into obedience, we can experience miraculous healing and restoration in our lives.
